Frequently Asked Questions

  • Email, call, or fill out this form. We can then set up a free 15-minute phone call.

I will want to know what is leading you to reach out for support, and what your goals of therapy are. I welcome any questions that you have.

From this call, we will both determine if I am a good fit to help you. If you decide to move forward with working with me, we can then set up our first appointment. If I am not the right therapist for you, I will refer you to several therapists who I think would be a better fit for your needs.

  • I am currently working with clients via secure video (zoom) or via telephone.

  • $195 for 50 minutes for individual session.

$225 for 75 minutes EMDR session.

  • I have a few sliding scale slots in my practice. Please ask me about availability. If all are filled, I can place you on a waitlist and refer you to low-cost therapy options in the Bay Area.

  • I do not accept insurance in my private practice. Upon request, I will provide you with a bill (called a superbill), which you may be able to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Another insurance option: I am a contract therapist with Octave Behavioral Health. Through this company, I am able to work with the following insurance plans: Health Net, Aetna, Blue Cross/Blue Shield/Anthem, and MHN insurance.

If you have one of these plans, you can schedule an appointment with me through Octave: https://www.findoctave.com/providers/mia-houtermans-lcsw/.

This route will require you to schedule an intake with one of Octave’s intake therapists. From there, you can request to work with me. If I do not have availability through Octave, they will recommend other therapists to you.

  • You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your healthcare provider for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
